Warner Bros Planning ‘Five Nights At Freddy’s’ Movie
One of the biggest surprises to come out of indie gaming, “Five Nights at Freddy’s” has enjoyed unparalleled success ever since the first game came out. As the title’s popularity surged, two more sequels were made to capitalize on the game’s hype and some fans would say that both sequels delivered. Now, Warner Bros has picked up the rights to bring these horrifying animatronic mascots to the big screen with a “Five Nights at Freddy’s” movie.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news of the game’s movie rights and confirmed that Roy Lee, who comes from Vertigo Entertainment, as well as Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg of KatzSmith Productions, will produce the film. Creator of the game Scott Cawton will also be involved in the making of the film.
“We’re looking forward to working with Scott to make an insane, terrifying and weirdly adorable movie,” said Grahame-Smith to The Hollywood Reporter.
For those unfamiliar with the game’s concept, “Five Nights at Freddy’s” involve animatronic mascots coming to life at night as a lone security guard does what’s possible to survive the night shift. Players would be in a monitor room that could control the electronics of the restaurant, but with limited electricity, so they would have to be strategic with their survival techniques.
“Five Night’s at Freddy’s” is one of the biggest indie game hits in a long time. Along with three sequels, the game has been copied numerous times according to Kotaku. On top of that factoid numerous let’s plays have been made on YouTube about the game, with YouTube user Markiplier’s video of the game gaining over 28 million views, which can be seen below.
While the news is exciting for fans, it should probably be noted that Hollywood’s relationship with video game movies hasn’t been a very positive one. The original “Street Fighter” film for example is enjoyed ironically, because of how bad it is, rather than it being a good movie in its own right. Right now, no story details have been revealed for the “Five Nights at Freddy’s” film, nor have there been any casting announcements.
