WTA Stars Dress Up As Superheroes For The Abierto Monterrey Players' Party
Tennis stars from the Women’s Tennis Association, or WTA, tour dressed up as superheroes for the players’ party of the ongoing Abierto Monterrey Open. Serbian tennis star Ana Ivanovic, Kristina Mladenovic, Jovana Jaksic and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova are among those who took time to dress fancy for the said occasion.
Ivanovic, who is on a quest to defend her title this year, looked fierce in a Catwoman outfit. She wore a black skintight overall matched with a face-covering face mask that came with ears. Ivanovic also had a whip to complete her ensemble for the party. She shared a snap of her costume on Instagram with the caption, “Watch out I scratch lol #Superhero #Playersparty #AbiertoMonterrey.”
Mladenovic sported a Wonderwoman costume, which she also posted on Instagram. Jaksic dressed up as the female version of Captain America, while Pavlyuchenkova donned a similar attire as Ivanovic’s. More pictures are available on the official website of WTA.
The 2015 Abierto Monterrey tournament runs from March 2 to March 8. This year is the seventh edition of the tournament. Marion Bartoli won in the inaugural tournament in 2009 held at the Sierra Madre Tennis Club. Previous winners include Ivanovic (2014), Pavlyuchenkova (2013, 2011, 2010) and Timea Babos (2012).
Top seed Ivanovic will begin her campaign today against Czech qualifier Nicole Vaidisova. The Serbian leads their head-to-head 3-1. Vaidisova, a former World No. 7, reportedly took a break from tennis for four and a half years between 2010 and 2014. This is the first time that the pair will meet on the court after more than seven years.
Mladenovic has already started her own campaign and cruised to the second round after beating Czech tennis player Tereza Smitkova in straight sets, 6-4 6-4. Below are the results of completed first round matches at the 2015 Abierto Monterrey Open.
