‘X-Factor’ judge Demi Lovato has surely earned millions of hearts when she revealed that she will be halfway around the world to celebrate her 21st birthday in an effort to make a difference. The Heart Attack hitmaker is turning 21 on August 21 and she couldn’t be more excited to spend her big day walking the extra miles helping people.

In an interview with Radio Station, 95.5 WPLJ, she said she decided to “give back on her birthday."

“I’m actually going to go to Africa,” she told radio station 95.5 WPLJ, as noted by Wetpaint. “I feel like the best way to celebrate anyone’s birthday is giving back and helping others.”

Though helping others is not a new territory to the Latina singer. She has been open and outspoken about her own struggles with bulimia, self-harm and suicide in the hopes that she would enjoin others to follow the road less travelled like she has to “fight her demons.”

Even in the midst of her own family crisis, Demi finds herself thinking of others’ welfare. While she was dealing with the death of her father Patrick in June, Demi thought that the best way to pay tribute to her dad and those survivors of cancer is to put up a scholarship and treatment for mental health and addiction.

"My father dealt with mental illnesses and he wasn't able to function in society and that happens to a lot of people," Demi told Good Morning America in June, said E!Online.

Calling the program, The Lovato Treatment Scholarship, Demi explained that the programme aims at providing assistance for treatment expenses, particularly those with mental health or addiction issues.

It’s an open secret that Demi has go through difficult times as a young star and she admitted that she even thought of killing herself at seven. A separate report by IBTimes-AU noted that Demi was even forced to sign an agreement with her school when she was young, indicating that she was not to harm herself in any way possible.

In 2010, Demi entered a facility in Chicago in the hopes to fight eating disorder, weight problems, among others. At the Pepsi Summer Bash held in Chicago in June 2013, Demi thanked the people of Chicago for their love and support when she was dealing with her ordeals.

"I had to go away to treatment and I want to let you know that this treatment center is called Timberline Knolls. It was here in Lemont, Illinois," she told the crowd last month, said E! Online.

Demi added, "I just want you guys to know that when I come to Chicago, I never forget that this place is the place that saved my life. If anybody out there is dealing with an eating disorder, substance abuse, cutting, bullying, whatever it is—I want you guys to know that I've been through it and that I've gotten through it and you can do it too."

To celebrate her birthday, Demi is paying this kindness forward by volunteering in Africa.

Demi's Made in The USA premieres on VEVO on July 17. The pop star will also be featured in the August 2013 issue of Fashion Magazine and Cosmopolitan.
