Which is the better console: PS4 or Xbox One? This question has been asked time and again since the clash in E3 2013 until a few weeks after the release date of both consoles.

No doubt that Sony and Microsoft have put their best in the next-gen consoles PS4 and Xbox One in an attempt to ensure that they only offer the best in performance and quality as the consumers enjoy their gaming consoles.

However, with both consoles already enjoying the limelight for a few weeks now, it has been observed these consoles are powerhouses and power drinkers with much higher energy use compared to the previous generation.

This claim came from the research conducted by the Natural Resources Defense Council after putting the PS4 and Xbox One under tight scrutiny to see how much power the consoles are using.

The figures showed that looking at the energy consumption at a long-term view, the Xbox One will use over 270 kw hours per year of use, which translates to over $150 in electricity costs. As for the PS4, it will use roughly 32 kw hours per year, going by the chart they made as featured by Extreme Tech.

Even though there is a notably big difference between the Xbox One and PS4 according to energy consumption, it has been found that the latter is actually more efficient, especially when looking at the breakdown of the energy use. The PS4 has considerably less usage when it is on connected standby mode, which is believed to be the state that both consoles are expected to be in most of the time.

Expert Reviews also reported what adds to the Xbox One's energy consumption is the Kinect, which remains part and parcel of the console to enable voice start-ups. This brings the Xbox One's energy consumption on connected standby mode to 10 kw compared to the PS4's 8 kw.

This, however, doesn't take away from that both consoles are in dire need of more power-saving solutions. The PS4 and Xbox One are already next-gen consoles, and more advanced energy efficiency methods can be one way to define one from the other.
