Yahoo Preps for Holidays; Recipe, Shopping Searches Get Facelift
Yahoo is revamping the site's search features and function as holiday season approaches in order to add a more informative and fun experience to their users.
The new search tool function is incorporating a guidebook-like style for recipes and product searches. Users could now filter and compare the results yielded from the search and they could also access their Facebook account from the search page which allows them to share their favorite search results through their Facebook page. The updated search features are also more "personalized" as it offers a complete presentation of different research results. Yahoo also partnered up with Twitter in order to create a real-time environment.
If a user would opt to conduct a "recipe search", it will show a group of scrollable window of photos that would present the popular recipe selection from different food sites. Users can now browse through the recipes and filter it into the kind of selection that they want like a low calorie one or through ingredients. There is also an option which is the new Yahoo recipe search tab which would also sort recipes through preparation time, star rating, diet, meal type, occasion or source.
In terms of product-related search, the scrollable window option is also in effect as well and it would produce a list of different products available with the model details, price, and retail information already available for users. Entertainment queries were also changed up a bit because if a user searches for a movie, they would find theaters and movie schedules. If a user searches for an actor's name, a collection of pictures would be available as well as recent news or tweets about that actor.
Caroline Tsay, senior director of search management at Yahoo explained the reason behind the make-over of the site remarking that the company is "more focused on giving answers to their users and not just links." The company expects that through these changes, they could regain their status as the top search engine. Experian Hitwise, an analytics firm revealed that Google was still leading as the top search engine which accounts for 65% of the market share while Yahoo hosted only 16%.
Yahoo had already made changes in their search functions two years ago through a 10-year partnership with Microsoft. In the agreement, Microsoft would supply Bing which is their search company to power Yahoo backend searches. Yahoo planned to use Bing in helping the company save money by focusing on the look of its search engine but not because of the technology it would bring. This partnership soon faced challenges when it was implemented.
Presently, these changes are only available in the U.S. but the company already revealed their plans to implement these changes in other countries as well.
