Samsung is unleashing a barrage of devices to challenge Apple's tablet supremacy, the latest of which is the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0, according to a freshly-leaked image and specs.

Samsung-centric blog site SamMobile provided a first glimpse of what it claimed as Samsung's new weapon to undercut Apple's iPad Mini and its second-gen serving, the faster and more powerful iPad Mini 2 with Retina.

In terms of muscle comparison, the Tab 3 8.0 is a decent powerhouse as SamMobile pointed to a dual-core CPU that steams roll to a top-speed of 1.5GHz with a 1.5GB of RAM supporting its processing tasks.

But in the display aspect, the new Samsung tablet is on the inferior side with its 8-inch WXGA TFT display screen flashing a resolution of only 1280 x 800, which will be twice as overwhelmed by the Mini 2's reported resolution of 2048 x 1536, suggesting a full Retina implement on release date.

Looking at the first alleged picture of the Tab 3 8.0, Samsung is set to deploy a tablet profile that is akin to the Galaxy smartphone template with an edge-to-edge screen rendition plus a physical Home button that is swamped by the capacitive Menu and Back keys.

To be true, Samsung appears to have achieved a cooler tablet make compared to the first two Galaxy Tab editions but the third serving remains a lacklustre try when pitted with the beautifully crafted Mini.

And if the recent render from MobiLeaks is of any indication, the Tab 3 falls short in the creativity department with the iPad Mini 2 expected to show off a build that virtually has no bezel surrounding the front screen.

The South Korean tech giant, however, tries to make by delivering the following decent features to fight off Apple's 7.9-inch slate:

  • Storage - 16 GB + MicroSD up to 64GB
  • GSM networks - EDGE (850/900/1800/1900) HSPA+42Mbps, HSUPA 5.76Mbps (850/900/1900/2100)
  • Camera - 5MP on main and 1.3MP on front
  • Plug-in - micro USB and 3.5mm EarJack
  • Connectivity - BT 4.0, USB 2.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, A-GPS
  • Battery - 4450mAh
  • Dimensions - 209.3 x 122.2 x 6.95 mm

Also, Samsung is expected to make a dent on the price department as the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 will likely retail at a lower price mark on its release date, which SamMobile said is set for June 2013.

No definite pricing was mentioned in the report but the tag should be significantly lower than that of the Galaxy Note 8.0, which sells unlocked between $US400 and $US500 in numerous markets around the world.

The iPad Mini, on the other hand, has a starting price of $US329 though analysts expect a considerable mark down once the iPad Mini 2 hits store shelves with the same basic price point.
