YouTube goes 3D, offers stereoscopic 3D support
Jumping right on the 3D bandwagon, Youtube will now bring HTML 5 based stereoscopic 3D video to computer users who have Nvidia 3D Vision enabled hardware. The 3D support is a joint project between Youtube, Mozilla Firefox and Nvidia.
Youtube has supported 3D videos since 2009 but this is the first time the video service will transcode these videos into the WebM format, Mashable reports. Users with Firefox 4 and Nvidia 3D Vision hardware and glasses will be able to view YouTube videos in 3D. If you want to watch in 3D you need to select HTML Stereo View in YouTube's 3D section. You'll also need to invest in Nvidia's 3D Vision kit which costs $149.
If you don't have these YouTube has a number of different ways for users to watch 3D. Older TVs can view 3D in rows, columns, or checkerboard patterns. Those with newer televisions can enjoy their favorite YouTube videos with a side by side setup. You can even use anaglyph glasses as well.
You can even share your favorite 3D videos using the NVIDIA 3DTV Play software to link your PC to your 3D HDTV. Users without Nvidia or Firefox will obviously have to stick to 2D to watch cute animals frolicking in YouTube or wait a few more years as YouTube will continue to expand and integrate 3D Vision technology in its website.
