Zynga's Project Z: Build Own Platform? Or Stay with Facebook?
While preparing to launch its IPO, Zynga has not kept a low profile during the "quiet period" imposed by the Securities and Exchange Commision. The social gaming company has unveiled new games and moves to have a new platform to offer their games other than social media sites with their own website in their "Zynga Unleashed" event.
"Project Z" is Zynga's attempt to build its own Web site. It aims to create their own online community independent from social media sites like Facebook and Google+ and create its own platform.
Zynga's plan for a Web site showcasing games playable in the browser is not new. In fact it has been around for more than a decade. Web sites such as Newgrounds and Armor Games have been at it with flash games and has a lot of users and has a huge community. What Zynga did to distinguish itself is put its games in Facebook. With Project Z, Zynga is still connected with the social media sites but will not be tethered with their rules and regulations like preventing them from sending out more notifications. It would also mean that Zynga would have its own credit system outside Facebook. Players could buy Zinga money instead of Facebook credits.
Zynga also launched a series of new games in Zynga Unleashed. The games include CastleVille, Zynga Bingo, Hidden Chronicles and Mafia Wars 2. CastleVille is the new iteration of the -Ville games starting from FarmVille then to CityVille. As usual it is composed of managing and creating a game world with a theme. Zynga Bingo is a part of the Zynga Casino franchise. Hidden Chronicles is a hidden objects game and Mafia Wars 2 is a mafia-themed adventure and building game which is now launched at Google+. Zynga has also released games on the mobile with three of them operating in HTML5. Zynga Poker Mobile Web, Words With Friends HTML5 and FarmVille Express will be playable faster and smoother in the browser claimed by Zynga. There are still no information in which social media site they will launch or if they would be in Project Z exclusively. The other two games are Mafia Wars Shake Down and Dream Zoo.
Another item in Zynga Unleashed is the announcement of "Zynga Direct." There is also no further information about it except this quote from Mark Pincus, CEO of Zynga: "For two years we've been building out products... We hope to enable a direct platform for a direct relationship with consumers whether on the web or mobile. We can give you a whole sandbox and create a new social (experience) around the games not just in the games."
Zynga filed in July 2011 documents for its IPO this year. Will Zynga's value increase by distancing itself from Facebook?
