Android 5.1 Lollipop Officially Announced, Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7, Nexus 9, Update Roll Out Begins Today
The Android 5.1 Lollipop update has been officially announced through an official blog post by Google. It is an incremental update that improves the stability and overall performance of Android devices.
Multiple SIM Cards
The new update brings support for multiple SIM cards. If the handset supports multiple SIM cards, users will be able to swap SIM cards without doing it physically, says CNET.
Device Protection
If a user loses a device with Android 5.1 on it or if the stolen device with the said update has been reset to factory settings, the device will remain locked until Google account credentials are entered and verified. This feature is confirmed to come on Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 and also on various tablets and tablets that support Android 5.1.
HD Voice Calling
Android 5.1 Lollipop update brings support for High Definition voice calling. On devices that support Android 5.1 Lollipop such as the Nexus 6 made available by T-Mobile or Verizon, users will be able to take advantage of high quality HD voice calling.
Quick Settings
Through Quick Settings, users will be easily able to join the available Wi-Fi networks. It will also allow users to easily manage connected Bluetooth devices. The International Business Times report that was published on Feb 25 explains in detail about the improvements that have arrived for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Quick Settings.
Myce, a technology bog, has spotted various builds of Android 5.1 Lollipop for different Nexus devices. The Nexus 4 will be receiving the LMY36B build, the Nexus 5 will get LMY47E, the Nexus 6 is going to receive LMY40 and the Nexus 7 (2012) is set to get updated with LMY47D.
According to the Extreme Tech, the Android 5.1 Lollipop roll out will start from today. First it will be rolled out as OTA updates exclusively for Nexus devices and soon complete factory images of the update will launched for these devices. The IBTimes report that the Android 5.1 Lollipop update will improve the RAM and battery management, bring back the silent mode and resolve the issue of sudden crashing of apps. However, the official blog post released by Google does not contain these details.
Google has released many incremental updates like Android 5.0.1 Lollipop, Android 5.0.2 Lollipop and the newly announced Android 5.1 Lollipop for the Android 5.0 Lollipop OS that came out in November last year.
