Amy’s Baking Company was by far the most controversial restaurant ever to be featured on celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay’s “Kitchen Nightmares,” but despite the backlash owners Amy and Samy Bouzaglo have received from the online community, their business is still standing (for now?). The same cannot be said for Chappy’s on Church. The owner and chef John “Chappy” Chapman claimed that appearing on the show became their downfall.

Just a week before the Bouzaglos appeared on the show in May, Chappy’s was featured, and it did not go well for the Nashville, Tennessee eatery.

“I love Nashville. Nashville’s been great to us and we love all our customers! This is a very sad day since we have worked so hard. We shouldn’t have done Kitchen Nightmares,” Chappy wrote on the restaurant’s Facebook account on Wednesday.

“We have spent several months struggling to come out of a negative situation. Plans are forthcoming right now and in the meantime, we are taking a break and spending time with family. Thank you.”

Originally located on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Chappy’s relocated to Nashville after Hurricane Katrina completely demolished the business. And thus Chappy and wife Starr, who manages the business, tried to make introduce their business in their new location, emulating the success they had in their first venue.

However, Chappy was dead set on maintaining everything old fashioned, which didn’t help the restaurant’s image at all. The interiors looked like it was designed in the ‘70s and the staff’s uniforms looked very retro and formal, and not in a good way.

The menu was also confusing. The waiting staff were ordered to recite “15 or 16” entries that weren’t listed. The prices of the food increased more than 3x in the evening as well.

But that’s not the only problems Chappy had. He refused to listen to feedbacks, telling his Southern customers (although not in their face) that they just don’t know true Cajun food.

And when Ramsay inspected the place, he found out how filthy the kitchen and its storage room were.

Ramsay called Chappy – a white-haired, plump, and seeming jovial man – a “joke,” telling him to stay out his own kitchen if he wanted his business to survive. Instead of heading the kitchen, he should just invest in hiring a real chef.

So is Chappy another drama that is the Amy’s Baking Company?

Not quite. The Chapmans seemed like superb individuals, at least based on their appearance on the show. Unlike the Bouzaglos, the Chapmans were loved by their staff and they didn’t go berserk on commenters online.

However, Chappy himself had been temperamental, untrusting, and so stubborn, refusing changes offered by Ramsay.

Seeing that his wife and his staff were all delighted at the changes implemented by the Michelin-starred chef, Chappy appeared to give in quietly. But at the end of the episode, the reality programme featured him going back to his old ways, which understandably frustrated his staff.

So perhaps that’s why Chappy’s wasn’t able to bounce back from its slump.

But according to NBC4 in Nashville, as first reported by RadarOnline.com, a sign on the restaurant’s door says that it is “seized for non-payment of Tennessee state taxes.”
