'Ant-Man' Star Michael Douglas Warns Young Hollywood Stars Who Are Too Social Media Conscious
Michael Douglas thinks there is a crisis on Hollywood, brought on by the advent and popularity of social media among young American stars. The Oscar winner thinks because young American stars are so obsessed with their social media accounts and the images they portray there, the roles they could have gotten in the acting world are going to the “Aussies and the Brits.”
Speaking with London’s Independent, Michael Douglas thinks young Hollywood should stay off their phones or social media accounts because this is getting in their way to real stardom. "There's something going on with young American actors -- both men and women -- because the Brits and Australians are taking many of the best American roles from them,” said the “Ant-Man” star. He said that being social media image conscious can ultimately wreck their chances of becoming successful actors, unlike the Brits and the Aussies.
Douglas explained that in Britain, young actors take their training seriously. On the other hand, those in the US are just going through “a sort of social media image conscious thing” instead of formal training, which can eventually cost them their talents and opportunities because it would “affect their range.”
He said Australia also has one thing over the US. He said that with the Aussies, they have more “masculine” males to offer. He said this is seriously lacking among US male stars. "In the US we have this relatively asexual or unisex area with sensitive young men and we don't have many Channing Tatums or Chris Pratts, while the Aussies do,” he added.
In short, this is spelling a crisis in young Hollywood. He said most of the young stars in the US now are just image conscious as opposed to being serious about the roles and parts they should be playing.
This is not the first time that young Hollywood stars are warned that they should do so much more to be successful in the long term. Earlier this year, a report has been presented by Variety magazine, citing a crisis in Hollywood in relation to social media as well. However, the magazine said that young Hollywood stars can lose their fame to social media stars. According to the report, some YouTube stars have become even more popular than mainstream celebrities among American teens.
