Apple of China: Xiaomi Crosses Shipment of 25 Million Smartphone Units Within First Half of 2014
Xiaomi, also known as 'Apple of China,' has announced that the company shipped a whopping 26.1 million smartphones within Q1 and Q2 of 2014. This phenomenal sales figure means the company clocked a 271% growth over the same period of 2013. In specific, the company had sold 18.7 million devices in the whole of 2013 and this year, Xiaomi has sold more than 25 million within the first half of 2014, says CNet.
For those unfamiliar with Xiaomi, the company is known to make smartphones, phablets and tablets with the look and feel of Apple's products. Some of the famous devices from Xiaomi include MiPad, Mi3 and Xiaomi Hongmi smartphones. It is worth noting that the company sells its products outside China as well. For example, Australia has an online 'Xiaomi Store' of its own.
Additionally, the company started selling its devices in markets like Singapore, Philippines, and Malaysia. Xiaomi is also expected to operate in Indonesia, Thailand and India shortly. Also, the unique selling point is that the handsets are relatively inexpensive but packed with high-end features. Although, Xiaomi sounds like Apple's look-alike, Xiaomi devices are giving solid competition to top Android device makers like Samsung, Sony and LG.
Xiaomi clocked this impressive sales figure when smartphone shipments to China weakened by 24.7% in Q1 of 2014, according to China's Ministry of Industrial and Information Technology via CNet.
Moreover, the company solely accounted for 11% of smartphone shipments in Q1 2014. Apparently, Xiaomi is the third largest smartphone maker in China. As far as the forecast goes, Xiaomi is expected to ship 60 million units in 2014 and a thumping 100 million units in 2015.
In addition to the sales figures, Xiaomi announced revenues of Chinese Yuan 33 billion that roughly translates to AU$5.6 billion and US$5.31 billion in the first half of 2014, along with a year-over-year growth of 149%.
The company has also ventured into products other than smartphones and tablets. It offers Mi WiFi router, Mi TV, a router, Mi Box (a la Apple TV), Mi Cloud service, Mi Talk messaging service and MiPower Bank external battery.
