Apple's WatchKit SDK is now available for developers so they can work their magic to create Apple Watch compatible apps. Along with releasing the kit, the tech giant also revealed some of the specifications of the upcoming wearable gadget.

There will reportedly be two Apple Watch variants with different display resolutions. Based on Apple's human interface guidelines, one of the smartwatch models will be 38 mm and will boast a screen resolution of 272 x 340 pixels, whereas the other model will be 42 mm and will be complemented by 312 x 390 pixels screen resolution, according to MacRumors.

Furthermore, the WatchKit guidelines also say that Apple Watch will come with a Retina display. Speaking of content on the display, the developers are advised to use 2x image assets. Apparently, Apple has asked developers to provide image assets for both screen sizes mentioned. Developers can utilise any image resources that look right on both display sizes. In case the image assets do not work for one of the screen sizes, developers may have to provide two different image assets targeting different sizes.

In addition, the developers were also instructed to display the "same content" on the Apple Watch, irrespective of the screen sizes. Moreover, Apple expects the content of any kind to enlarge or condense naturally to occupy the available space surrounding the screen. Specifically, Apple guidelines ask the developers to be mindful of certain aspects when developing content for the Apple Watch. This includes in-depth personalisation and connection to smartwatch wearers, with the help of heart rate sensor and activity monitor.

The tech giant has also instructed that created content be "lightweight." This is predominantly due to the fact that wearable gadgets are designed for simple interactions. Any form of interaction should reportedly be accessed and dismissed easily and promptly to improve usability and also for privacy.

According to BGR, Apple has said that the developed apps will only work when the Apple Watch is tethered to an iPhone. Nonetheless, the wearable will need to be paired only at the early stages. At some point in 2015, the smartwatch will reportedly support standalone apps. Lastly, Apple iOS Developer Program members can download Apple's WatchKit development SDK from Apple's developer site.
