Davis Cup captain Wally Masur has expressed his optimism that 25th world ranked Bernard Tomic will soon find his way back to the team. He anticipates that Tomic will return to represent Australia’s Davis Cup team in the semifinals in September.

Masur was already working on reconciling the adversary between Tennis Australia and Bernard Tomic, who recently made unfriendly remarks directed towards Australia’s governing body in tennis following his third round loss to Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon, according to a report by AAP. The result of Tomic’s verbal tirade against Tennis Australia was his omission from Australia’s player nomination for its tie against Kazahkstan last weekend. The report said that Masur had already contacted Tomic to ensure that he was doing fine after he was abolished from the squad.

The 52-year-old former professional tennis player wants Tomic back on the Australian Davis Cup team. “He is a great Davis Cup player,” Masur said. “I think it will be really healthy for him and great for us to get him back in the fold.”

Masur said that Tomic’s chances of making the team are “good.” He pointed out that they are a bunch of individuals and tennis players who need to put aside their differences to work together for the best interest.

Tomic represented Australia at Davis Cup from 2010 until 2013. In 2014, Tomic was suspended from representing Australia in Davis Cup following his poor performance in the first round of the tennis event. This year, Tomic has been a key player who helped Australia to reach the last eight in the Davis Cup for the very first time since 2006 after snatching victory against Czech No. 1 Lukas Rosol 7-6 6-3 7-6 to give the team a 3-1 lead in their best-of-five singles tie in the first round of the World Group playoffs in March, the Sydney Morning Herald reported. Tomic has a 14-2 win-loss record in Davis Cup singles matches.

Meanwhile, Australia has bounced back from a 2-0 deficit during last weekend’s tie against Kazakhstan in Darwin. Former World No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt and Sam Groth fought hard to score victories in the doubles and singles matches. Australia will face Great Britain in the semifinals.
