Boxing News 2015: Shane Mosley Jr. picks Miguel Cotto over Canelo Alvarez
Shane Mosley Jr., the son of veteran boxer and former champion with the same name, has made his prediction for the winner of the upcoming Miguel Cotto vs. Canelo Alvarez match-up later this year although the American said the fight will be a very close one.
The young pugilist stated in an interview that he’s going with the more experienced boxer—34-year-old Puerto Rican Cotto—over the younger Mexican boxer, 25-year-old Alvarez.
“I love Canelo, but on experience, you can’t [pay for] experience,” Mosley Jr. declared to Hustle Boss. “Cotto has the experience in his favor. It’s like 51/49 Cotto. Very little [edge].”
The younger Mosley (4-1-0, 4 knockouts) has started his pro boxing career just last year, when he made his pro debut in April, but his opinion carries weight basing on the fight history of Cotto and Alvarez.
Cotto (40-4-0, 33 knockouts), who is from Caguas, Puerto Rico, has been a pro since February of 2001, which means he’s been in the fight business for more than 14 years.
For comparison, Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 knockouts), who is from Tlajomulco de Zuñiga, Jalisco, Mexico, turned pro in 2005, the year when the Puerto Rican has already held a world title in the super lightweight division.
Curiously, Mosley Jr.’s father has slugged it out with both Alvarez and Cotto; the Mexican defeated Mosley in 2012 via a 12-round unanimous decision win while the Puerto Rican defeated the former champion in 2007 also via a 12-round unanimous decision victory.
The Canelo vs. Cotto fight will be for the World Boxing Council middleweight championship and will be held at the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada on Nov. 21, 2015.
