'Call of Duty: Black Ops 3' gets bonus zombie map 'The Giant' for collector's edition and season pass
Now that “Call of Duty: Black Ops III” is nearing its release date, developer Treyarch has revealed various details about the game, including an exclusive zombies map called “The Giant.” The map will be available to those who purchased the game’s season pass or the collector’s edition of “Black Ops 3.”
According to PlayStation Lifestyle, “The Giant” is based on Der Reise, one of the zombie maps from “Call of Duty: World at War,” which came out way back in 2008. At that time, the series was still about World War II but had a zombie shooter that fans enjoyed, to the point that it appeared in numerous “Call of Duty” games.
While the map is based on Der Reise, “The Giant” is actually a follow-up story to the “Origins” map from “Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.” Game Informer also confirmed that the characters from the “Origins” map – Dempsey, Nikolai, Takeo and Richto – will be returning.
Returning with these characters is the World War II theme of the map, which is a nod to “World’s at War” and part of the continuation from “Origins.” Considering how both “Black Ops 3” and “Advanced Warfare” are about the future, some fans might appreciate the pulpier settings of the Second World War as a nice change of pace.
Adding to the pulp and old-school feeling of the map is the addition of teleporters, hellhounds and the weapon-upgrading Pack-a-Punch machine. The setting reportedly feels like a “Captain America” comic from the 1940s, which might be the theme the developers were going for, to capitalise on the pulp setting.
Oddly enough, despite having a zombie mode, the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game will not have access to “The Giant.” The season pass will also not be available to last-gen consoles and will be limited for the PS4, Xbox One and Windows PC. This seems like another blow to last-gen gamers, as Activision previously announced that these versions of the game would not have a campaign mode.
“Call of Duty: Black Ops III” will be coming to retail and digital stores next month, on Nov. 6. Gamers will be able to play “The Giant” on the first day, assuming they purchased the season pass of the game.
