Ex-PSV boy Memphis Depay’s single goal couldn’t help Man-U get past home side PSV in the opening Group B game of the UEFA Champions League.

The Eindhoven crowd saw their home team strike back in an upsetting match for the visitors, even as Manchester’s star player Luke Shaw suffered an injury off a block. The Red Devils bounced back from the setback when Depay hit bulls-eye with a blazing score past PSV’s goalie Jeroen Zoet.

United looked to strengthen their ground with Depay trying to capitalize the ball along with teammate Chris Smalling but the Dutch boys were on the guard. PSV player Hector Moreno tackled through Daley Blind’s defensive efforts and levelled the playing field with a smooth flick for an equalizing goal.

The second-half saw Depay attempting a double goal to put United back in the lead, but Zoet was on his fastest form between the posts. Phillip Cocu’s side gave Louis van Gaal’s boys a tough time as Luciano Narsingh found the right spot to push in another score off Guardado’s cross to Lestienne. United’s trump card Marouane Fellaini couldn’t made the difference they wanted as Cocu’s team locked onto their lead against the Red Devils.

In the end, there was no trick in the book that Van Gaal could use, as multiple errors from the United side cost the Manchester club its first defeat and the Dutch a victorious opening to the season.

Shaw’s injury added to the woes as it was later announced that he could not play in the upcoming match, costing the visitors a key to their redemption plans. It didn’t make Manchester’s day any better when its other club, Manchester City, too suffered defeat in its opening game.

Man-of-the-match Moreno’s feats in the air along with a strong back up from the Eresdivisie champions’ firm defence saw Cocu’s men clinch their first win in this year’s Champions League.
