France Crushes Mexico To Top Group F, Advances To Round Of 16
France cruise over Mexico to a 5-0 win and cap their dominant performance in Group F of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Ottawa, Canada. Marie Laure Delie wasted no time and scored the first goal of the game, 35 seconds just after the match started.
The goal gave way to an easy win of the heavily-favoured France team that had a shocking 2-0 loss from Colombia on Saturday, one of the biggest upsets in the tournament’s 24-year history.
"We made things difficult for ourselves by losing against Colombia. A loss today would have sent us home. We've achieved our first objective, we can breathe a bit easier now," admitted France coach Philippe Bergeroo via reports.
The France, also known as Les Bleues, scored three goals in 13 minutes including an own goal from Mexican goalkeeper in the 9th minute mark and one of Eugenie Le Sommer’s two goals in the 13th.
France will face on Sunday a South Korean team coming off a 2-1 come-from-behind win against Spain.
Mexico’s hope of advancing to the round of 16 had lost by halftime, but could have gotten them into the next round if they had won. They only managed two decent shots the entire game and only half those shots is on target.
“We kept allowing the French team to keep momentum and we didn’t give ourselves a chance to compete with the start of today’s game,” Mexican coach Leonardo Cuéllar said.
Les Bleues’ victory was very clear by halftime and pulled away from the winless Mexico in the second half capped by Amanda Henry’s sensational strike from 25-yards out. The 25-year old midfielder said it was a pleasure to score in the World Cup and hopes to have more goals in the upcoming matchup.
France finished first in Group F ahead of England on goal difference, while Mexico has not won any games in their three World Cup appearances with a 0-6-3 slate.
