George Clooney Update: ‘Tomorrowland’ Not Big Enough, Amal Clooney Wows Tokyo Crowd
Disney original “Tomorrowland” starring George Clooney was not big enough during the Memorial Day weekend although it did lead in ticket sales. Meanwhile, his wife Amal Clooney wowed the Tokyo crowd on Monday when they showed up for the movie premiere in the country.
“Tomorrowland” drew a total of US$41.7 million ($53.3 million) worth of combined ticket sales in the U.S. and Canada for four days, including the much anticipated Memorial Day weekend. This amount is not anywhere near the expected figure for the movie, which was produced for US$170 million ($219 million).
For contrast, the LA Times reported that “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End” – also from Disney – earned $139.8 million in the U.S. and Canada in 2007. It is the current record holder for the holiday. The Sydney Morning Herald cited “Hollywood’s originality problem” as the reason for the lackluster “Tomorrowland” ticket sales.
The Memorial Day weekend ticket sales may have not done so well in the box office, but husband and wife George and Amal Clooney did not let it dampen their mood. The couple showed up radiant and smiling in Tokyo for the movie premiere. Amal wowed the crowd in her elegant satin gown.
In this report, People shows the arrival photos of George and Amal Clooney in Japan, as well as their premiere night ensemble on Monday. The magazine said Amal flew with Clooney to Tokyo as part of the couple’s agreement to always be together as much as possible.
“Our only adjustments are figuring out our schedules. Our deal is that we can't be more than a week apart. So far, that's worked out pretty well,” George Clooney was quoted as saying in the same People report.
In responding to questions about having a baby, George told CBS This Morning that the idea is not a priority, but he admitted he has “thought about it.” Clooney also revealed to CBS This Morning that he was on his knee for 28 minutes when he proposed to Amal.
