The new Gmail app is not working properly in various Apple devices such as the iPhone 4S, prompting Google to withdraw it.

Internet giant Google introduced its app for Gmail last week but decided to pull it after users reported receiving errors in messages.

The California-based company announced via Twitter; "The iOS app we launched today contained a bug with notifications. We have pulled the app to fix the problem. Sorry we messed up."

Google said its developers are fixing the bugs and it will release a new version as soon as possible. The app was up for about an hour and users posted complaints on various social networking sites such as Google+, Facebook and Twitter.

On Google+, apps lead Dave Girouard issued a more detailed explanation of the glitch, saying the app contained "a bug which broke notifications and caused users to see an error message when first opening the app."

This is the first time Gmail has been available in the Apple App Store. Users who successfully installed the app may still use it with bug.

Google released the app to attract more e-mail customers and compete with rivals Yahoo! and Microsoft Corp. According to data collected by ComScore, Inc., Yahoo! is the number one U.S. provider of Web-based e-mail, with 93.9 million users, while Google comes second with 62.9 million while Microsoft is trailing behind Google with 44.5 million.
