Google Is Shutting Down Google+ Photos on August 1
Google is said to close Google+ photos to make way for its recently launched Google Photos, a free photo host with unlimited storage. Google +, the photo hosting solution built within the social network, is shutting down on August 1.
According to the Google+ post, the photo hosting service will stop working. The post says, “In an effort to ensure everyone has the best photos experience we can deliver, on August 1st we'll start to shut down Google+ Photos - initially on Android, and soon thereafter on the Web and iOS.”
The users can now download the all new Google Photos app on Android and make a switch from the old one. All the existing photos and videos on Google+ will be saved and available once the user navigates to their new home. With the new app, users will be able to backup, edit and share photos and videos with unlimited storage and automatic organisation. If the user does not update to the new app, Google + photos will still be stored and available here.
Users can take a backup through Google Takeout. According to Fortune, Google further added that Android users may have already received a prompt message suggesting users to download the Google Photos app, which will automatically assess their content after the switch.
Advantages of Google Photos over Google+ Photos
Google+ Photos adhere to the Gmail and Google Drive storage limits, whereas Google Photos provides unlimited storage for hosting photos.
Google Photos can detect if the phone is running low on space. It will give options to clear the device by deleting photos which are already backed up to the cloud, reports Tech Crunch.
Google Photos is compatible with Google Takeout. This would help users take out hundreds of photos and videos from Google and store it in a personal hard drive.
There is another paid plan for storage as well. If the users avail the original “unlimited storage” plan, then Google compresses all the photos above 16PM cap for photos and 1080p for videos.
The “assistant” feature organises photos, sort photos day-by-day, makes new creations and aligns them in a logical manner. It also offers some manual controls that will help users make albums, movies and animations from their photos.
