Ivanka Trump will reportedly have her own office in West Wing
Ivanka Trump will soon have an office in the West Wing of the White House. She will also obtain a security clearance so she can receive classified information as she informally serves as an adviser to US President Donald Trump.
According to Politico, Ivanka’s office is situated on the second floor of the West Wing. Her space is next to senior adviser Dina Powell. Jamie Gorelick, Ivanka’s attorney, clarified that the first daughter currently holds no official role in her father’s administration, but will serve as his “eyes and ears.”
Ivanka will not be considered a federal employee and won’t be paid, but will be given a government-issued communications device to “protect government records and any information to which she may have access.” Gorelick said she will comply with the same restrictions as that of other government employees, which was stressed by Ivanka herself in a statement.
“While there is no modern precedent for an adult child of the president, I will voluntarily follow all of the ethics rules placed on government employees,” Ivanka said. She assured that she will continue to offer her father advice and counsel.
Although a spokesperson for Ivanka assured that her role was signed off on by the White House counsel’s office, ethics watchdogs question the arrangement as she is not automatically subjected to certain ethics rules while she serves as a de facto White House adviser. Ivanka’s spokesperson reportedly did not comment about the arrangement.
Norm Eisen, the ethics czar during the administration of former US President Barack Obama, expresses concern that if Ivanka voluntarily subjects herself to the rules of the White House, she can also voluntarily un-subject herself. “They're not saying she's going to voluntarily subject herself to ethics rules to be nice,” he said.
Trump’s eldest daughter has stepped down from her role in her fashion and jewellery brand, though her financial stakes remain. Abigail Klem was appointed as president of her company. Ivanka also opted to leave her post as an executive vice president for development and acquisitions at the Trump Organization, leaving her brothers, Donald Trump Jr and Eric Trump, in charge.
Ivanka’s husband, Jared Kushner, serves as an official senior adviser in the Trump administration. In January, Kushner said he would not take a salary for his work. Her book titled “Women Who Work” is due out in May and Ivanka is reportedly planning to donate the net proceeds to charities that focus on women in the workforce.
