Jason Voorhees Revealed for ‘Mortal Kombat X,’ As Xbox 360 And PS3 Versions Are Delayed
In the lead up to release, it seems hardly a week goes by without a new character reveal for “Mortal Kombat X.” We’ve seen old favourites, second generation characters and new contenders, now, Netherrealm has decided to pull the curtain back on at least one of its guest fighters, horror icon; Jason Voorhees.
As noted by Gematsu, Voorhees is included as part of what developer is calling the “Kombat Pack.” Analogous to a season pass, the Kombat Pack provides gamers with four playable characters and some additional costumes. Players who purchase the Kombat Pack also get access to the “Samurai Pack,” which includes character costumes called Samurai Shinnok, Jingu Kitana and Ronin Kenshi.
Gameranx reports that The Kombat Pack is included in the Kollector’s Edition, the Limited Edition and the Premium Edition and may also be purchased separately for $29.99. The Kombat Pack comes with other perks too, providing owners early access to unreleased DLC before NetherRealm makes it available to the wider public. Despite this, the main draw for most gamers will be the addition of “Friday the 13th” antagonist, Jason Voorhees. Though no gameplay has been made available, a short video on the Mortal Kombat Community YouTube channel gives potential buyers a glimpse at the character’s appearance.
Unfortunately, gamers who own an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 will have to be patient while waiting to get their hands on the Kombat Pack and indeed “Mortal Kombat X” itself. Following a rash of rumours, publisher NetherRealm issued a statement to Videogamer, officially delaying the release of the last-generation versions of “MKX.”
"Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment today confirmed that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Mortal Kombat X being developed by High Voltage Software will release this summer," read the statement.
The delay follows the recent release of a trailer showing off the entire Cage family, highlighting NetherRealm’s commitment to continuing the story it began with the 2013 reboot. IGN notes that the game’s story mode will employ storytelling techniques inspired by “The Godfather II,” using sequences that take place in one time frame to inform the back story of a mysterious and as-yet-unrevealed new character.
Speaking with PlayStation Lifestyle, Senior Producer at NetherRealm Studios Adam Urbano stated that “MKX” had been especially challenging for the development team when it came to decided which characters to include and which to reserve for DLC. Urbano said the studio works right down to the wire, adding new characters until they simply have to ship the game. At that point, they look at what they’ve got left and plan their DLC strategy around that. “Mortal Kombat” is set for release on Xbox One, PC and PS4 on April 14 and Xbox 360 and PS4 at an undetermined date this summer.
