Phone-hacking is not a new thing. But recently among the long list of possible targets picked up a royal addition - the Duchess of Cambridge. We have compiled here all the incidents of phone hacking.

On Tuesday prosecutors told a London jury hearing (evidence in the phone-hacking trial) that Middleton's name was found in the handwritten page of Glenn Mulcaire's probable targets, titled "Target Evaluation." Mulcaire is a private investigator employed at London newspaper, who already has served time for illicit hacking into celebrity phones.

The royal couple has been an object of great interest by the global media but categorically British media, mainly the boisterous tabloids, as their royal relationship came into limelight while they were in college. Eversince Prince William and Prince Harry were among the known victims of illegal phone-hacking by British journalists.

Mulcaire was arrested for phone hacking in 2006 and the "target" list was among thousands of pages of notes found after his arrest according to "The Associated Press." Other listed names included:

  • Boris Johnson, now mayor of London
  • Angelina Jolie's stunts double Eunice Huthart
  • PR guru Max Clifford
  • Former England football manager Sven-Goran Eriksson,
  • Tom Parker Bowles
  • Celebrity Kerry Katona.

Whether all in the list actually were hacked or not is still the big question. Mulcaire recently pleaded guilty to further hacking charges and was also jailed in 2007 for hacking the phones of royal aides for "News of the World (NOTW)."

The confirmation that MIddleton had been a possible target is new, but it has long been known that the royals and their aides were among the most primitive known victims in the scandal that continue to cause havoc in Britain.

In 2011, the news surfaced after "The Guardian" newspaper revealed that Rupert Murdoch's best-selling tabloid, "News of the World," had for years snooped on the voice mails of celebrities in Britain, including actors, politicians, athletes, royals and teen crime victims.

As a result, Murdoch's News Corp media empire ruined, "News of the World," subsequently leaving hundreds of journalists out of jobs. Not only apologized to victims, and paid out millions in compensation settlements but Murdoch was dragged before an investigating committee of angry members of the Parliament.

The Guardian's candid reporting was commendable making at least three people already been convicted or pleaded guilty. Many journalists were arrested and faced charges, and the corrupt relationship between police, politicians and the media were exposed before the public.

Noteworthy fact: One corollary is the recent passage of a strict media regulation scheme that would be unlawful in the U.S. and is opposed by many in the British media, (mainly by "The Guardian") now making hot headlines by publishing scoops from National Security Agency Leaker Edward Snowden.

The trial in which all this is coming out involves Rebekah Brooks, the former News of the World editors, who was more or less like a daughter to Murdoch; Andy Coulson, who was about to become a top communications spinmeister for Prime Minister David Cameron until the phone-hacking scandal forced him to walk out.

Both of them are being tried with six others on charges related to phone hacking, bribing officials and obstructing justice but have pleaded not guilty.

Among other shocking revelations that have emerged out of the trial so far, the jury has learned that Brooks and Coulson conducted a years-long adulterous affair (Brooks and Coulson had an extramarital affair between 1998 and 2004). At the same time their journalists were exposing the treacherous affairs of politicians, celebrities and other high profile personalities.
