Last Australian in 2015 US Open bows out, Pennetta makes QF
Samantha Stosur couldn’t hold up the Australian flag at the 2015 US Open bowing out in the fourth round of the women’s singles competition against Flavia Pennetta of Italy in straight sets, 6-4 6-4.
Pennetta broke Stosur’s serve once in each set and the Italian took advantage of Stosur’s 35 unforced errors. The Australian had four break opportunities in the match but couldn’t capitalize. Stosur was the last woman, or man, standing at the 2015 US Open.
Pennetta stated that he was happy with her performance, as she remained perfect against Stosur in their career meetings. The Italian is 7-0 against the Australian all-time.
“Everything was really good today: my serve, my return, everything was working pretty good,” Pennetta shared in the post-match interview via the tournament’s official website.
Meanwhile, Stosur admitted that Pennetta has always been a tough match-up. “I think she's able to kind of -- the spin that I use and the weapons that I like to do against pretty much every single player doesn't seem to bother her. She can let the spin come out of the ball. Almost looks like she's got lots of time to hit what she wants to hit,” Stosure said in the post-match interview. “She serves very well against me. Yeah, like my big weapons don't seem to be weapons against her, so that makes life pretty tough.”
This will be Pennetta’s sixth quarterfinals appearance at the US Open and she will face fifth seed Petra Kvitova of Czech Republic in the next round. Pennetta made the final four in 2013, her best finish in this Grand Slam tournament.
