Lewis Hamilton And Mercedes Close To Agreeing On Terms For A Multi-Year Contract
Lewis Hamilton is reportedly close to securing a multi-year deal with Mercedes. Hamilton, who is in the final year of his current contract with Mercedes is hoping that the contract will be finalised before the 2015 Malaysian Grand Prix, which takes place from March 27 to March 29 at the Sepang International Circuit.
The reigning Formula One, or F1 world champion spoke with Sky Sports News HQ and silenced the speculations that he was considering leaving Mercedes to join Ferrari, especially after a report about Hamilton’s purchase of La Ferrari surfaced a few days ago. With his recent statement, there is no chance that Hamilton would trade Mercedes for a different F1 outfit.
“It is going back between lawyers so hopefully it is done before the weekend,” Hamilton said. “That would be great, but if not in due time.”
Hamilton didn’t reveal how much he will get paid in the new contract. The Mirror estimated that he could earn £90 million or equivalent to more than $130 million from his three-year contract with Mercedes. It could surpass the deals that were offered to Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill, James Hunt, Sir Jackie Stewart, and Fernando Alonso.
For now, Hamilton hopes to build up on his strong start this season. After claiming pole position, fastest lap, and title in the season-opener at Albert Park in Melbourne, Australia, Hamilton has set eyes set on the Malaysian Grand Prix. He does not want to worry about his Mercedes contract in the meantime.
Hamilton told Press Association that he has been working hard with the team’s engineers to deliver an even better performance at Sepang. He added that winning every race has always been the goal of the team and he is looking forward to “creating history” again following a dominant 2014 season. Last year, Mercedes racked up 16 race wins out of the 19 Grand Prix events.
“Now I've won in Australia I'm going to extract everything from my data and see how I can better my performance,” Hamilton said. “I definitely feel in this next race I can be better than I was last time out."
