By this time, people should be used to Lorde’s frankness. The 17-year-old Kiwi sensation doesn’t hold back when she has to say, except when she’s sorry. So when a new interview comes out revealing that she has dissed other artists, it’s not really news. Still, it’s worth mentioning that Nicki Minaj, Drake, and Lana Del Rey have been added to the growing number of artists that Lorde has allegedly dissed.

In an interview with Interview magazine, Lorde explained how she came up with her record-breaking hit “Royals,” saying she just wrote what she and her friends were thinking when listening to other artists’ music.

“Around the middle of last year, I started listening to a lot of rap, like Nicki Minaj and Drake, as well as pop singers like Lana Del Rey. They all sing about such opulence, stuff that just didn’t relate to me – or anyone I knew,” she said.

“How are we listening to this? It’s completely irrelevant.”

If the interview is familiar, it’s because Lorde just repeated the thoughts that she has been voicing even before she was just starting to break through the international music scene.

“What really got me is this ridiculous, unrelatable, unattainable opulence that runs throughout,” she told the Observer in June. “Lana Del Rey is always singing about being in the Hamptons or riving her Bugatti Veyron or whatever, and at the time, me and my friends were at some house party worrying how to get home because we couldn’t afford a cab.

“This is our reality.”

To be fair to the young rising star, she was referring to her inability to relate to the lyrics of the other artists’ songs. Although the media has been tallying the number of people that she has apparently dissed, it’s worth noting that Lorde’s comments are almost always only about the sentiments and messages of songs.

As she has explained on her Twitter account, she admires Nicki and Drake, but she just can’t relate to their songs.

nice try @ComplexMag, but i have nothing but love and admiration for both nicki and drake (have said this x1000)

just because their songs aren't my reality (being 17 and from auckland) doesn't mean i don't admire their musicianship and careers! — Lorde (@lordemusic) November 27, 2013
