The Microsoft Cortana has just been developed for the iPhone and Android. It would appear that the tech giant is expanding its smartphone voice assistant to other platforms that do not run on Windows.

Windows Blog has confirmed that the Cortana app will be coming for Android and iOS this year. According to the report, the app will be making its way to Android late next month, while the iOS will be getting its fair share later this year.

Windows 10 will reportedly be released with a pre-installed app, Phone Companion, which was purposely designed to help the new Windows OS work much better with smartphones.

Simply plugging a handset that runs either on Android or iOS into a computer with Windows 10 will immediately help install a wide range of Microsoft apps into the unit, such as OneDrive, Office, Skype, Outlook, and OneNote, as well as Music and Cortana. Users who want to listen to certain songs on their PC can now do so on their smartphone, and vice versa.

Although Microsoft has now opened up to non-Windows platforms, they have not provided a fully identical Windows experience. Cortana might be able to answer questions, give alerts, verify locations, and track flights on Android and iOS, it will not be able to do some of its Windows-oriented functions, such as changing system settings, launch other apps, and give a hands-free repose to the “Hey, Cortana” trigger, according to Ars Technica.

Cortana being made available to other platforms is evidence of what Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft, has laid out on multiple occasions. As she has stated, the focus of the company is not on the physical mobility of the devices, but on the mobility of experiences across devices.

The company is only trying to make sure that, regardless of what particular device the people are using, they will always have access to Microsoft’s software and services.
