Microsoft recently unveiled its plans for the HoloLens with an on-stage demo of a video game titled “Project X-Ray.” The video game is a mix of virtual, augmented and mixed reality that could possibly be played at the comforts of the player’s living room.

The video game was presented at the recently held Microsoft October 2015 event by Terry Myerson, IGN reports. Attendants of the event were surprised to see Myerson battling and interacting with holographic enemies. He made use of a wearable holographic gauntlet as he shot down spawning enemies which seemingly reacted to the way the player moves.

The holographic equipment allows the user to move freely as he is not obstructed by any gear, aside from the HoloLens worn for the eyes. As compared to other motion controlled consoles like the Wii and PlayStation Move, the HoloLens removes the hassle of limited movement.

The holographic enemies are small in size but this is done so that they could easily track down the location of the players. It also allows the enemies to measure the parameters of the room for more accurate attacks against the player, for a more realistic experience.

The game takes on a simplistic method of playing, Digital Trends notes. However, the fact that players get to interact with the playing area and enemies in general give the HoloLens an edge over other VR headsets like the Oculus Rift and the PlayStation VR. Previous VR kits only provided players with a virtual space to look at, not play in.

Microsoft also announced that those interested in a HoloLens development kit can now sign up for the gear. The HoloLens will cost US$3000 (AU$4175) and it is expected to roll out to developers as early as 2016. However, a consumer version of the VR kit is yet to be announced by the developer.
