MLB News: Bad Blood Continues With More Kansas City Royals Ejected Against Oakland Athletics
Third straight day of clashes between the two teams.
Tensions continued to flare between the Kansas City Royals and the Oakland Athletics with five more Royals players ejected on Sunday night. It was the second straight day Royals players were ejected and the third day in a row that players and coaches from both teams clashed on the field.
The latest incident came towards the start and ends of the match. Royals’ Lorenzo Cain was hit by a pitch from Oakland’s starter Scott Yazmir and manager Ned Yost, pitching coach Dave Eiland both came to argue with umpire Greg Gibson, who immediately ejected the two of them. Both teams were also issued a warning at the time.
Things heated up again between the two when Kelvin Herrera, the Royals receiver, threw a 100mph fastball right behind Brett Lawrie’s head. He was immediately ejected by plate umpire Greg Gibson but both teams were already out, clashing on the field. Herrera also pointed at his head, while leaving. Royals coach Don Wakamatsu and inactive shortstop Alcides Escobar were also ejected by Gibson.
"That's what got me hot. That's what got me mad. You can't throw at my head and then say, 'Next time I face you, it's in the head. He needs to pay for that. He doesn't throw 85. He throws 100," Brett Lawrie was reported as saying by ESPN.
The Royals, however, won the match 4-2 after Kendrys Morales’ double in the eighth inning broke a tie at 2-2. The A’s had scored via Ben Zobrist’s singles against Royals’ starter Danny Duffy in the third and fifth innings.
On Friday, Brett Lawrie’s slide during a run had ended up injuring Royals’ Alcides Escobar, who missed both matches over the weekend. Both teams had clashed at the time of the incident. Yordano Ventura was then ejected Saturday for throwing a retaliatory pitch at Lawrie with both teams clashing again. The Royals took the three game series 2-1.
