Detroit Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez went under the knife on Tuesday to repair a torn left meniscus and will miss not be available to play for four to six weeks, according to a report. Nickmaned “V-Mart”, Martinez is expected to resume full baseball activity before the start of the next Major League Baseball, or MLB, season.

"We are very happy the surgery went well and that Victor will be ready to compete for the start of the 2015 season," Detroit Tigers general manager David Dombrowski said to ESPN.com The expected date of return and recovery was shorter than what many expected. Martinez hurt his knee during one of the Tigers’ offseason workouts.

The 36 year old slugger batted .335 and had 32 home runs and 103 RBIs during the 2014 MLB season. He was key in brining the Tigers their fourth American League title in four years. Detroit went 90-72 in the 2014 MLB Season ranking first in team batting average at .277 and second in total runs at 757.

When Martinez returns, he will be playing in his 12th year in the league. Previous stints include playing for the Cleveland Indians from 2002 to 2009, Boston Red Sox in 2009 and 2010 and the Detroit Tigers from 2011 to 2014. For his career he has a batting average of .307 with 1,668 hits, 189 home runs and 927 RBIs. However, The Tigers' postseason ended early when they were swept by the Baltimore Orioles in the American League Division Series.

Martinez is a five time MLB All-Star being named to the feat in 2004, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2014. He has also won the Edgar Martinez Award, given to the best designated hitter in the league, in 2014 and also won twice the Silver Slugger Award in 2004 and 2014.
