The April 14 release of “Mortal Kombat X” was met with widespread critical and gamer acclaim, as the game successfully balanced introducing a new generation of fighters with carefully respecting long-time favourites. The game’s story carved a winding path through history that introduced a vast number of non-playable “MK” characters. Now, new information has emerged hinting that some of those characters might be playable in story-based DLC packs.

The hint comes from none other than Netherrealm creative director Ed Boon himself, who replied positively to a tweet from a fan suggesting that the non-playable story characters be made playable. As noted by Gamespot, “MKX” includes characters like Baraka, Rain and Sindel as non-playable boss characters that players can fight against but not control.

The news tallies with the info from NetherRealm while the game was still in development. In a pre-launch interview with PlayStation Lifestyle, Senior Producer at NetherRealm Studios Adam Urbano said that the team hoped to include some of the characters that make an appearance in the story mode in the future, adding that the studio typically worked on the game until they absolutely had to submit a gold master for certification.

“The production team likes to find ways to make it so they can work until the last possible second to sneak on more and more content. So, at that point when we are done, we are close, about a month or so, then we start to look at all the fun stuff we couldn’t get to because we love these games and would work on them forever if we could,” he said.

Aside from the roster of non-playable characters that could be included in the story pack DLC, “Mortal Kombat X” will also bring Tremor, the Predator, Tanya and Jason Vorhees to fans via post-launch DLC. As reported by Videogamer, every DLC pack released for “MKX” will also include a free character skin, allowing players who never purchase a single DLC pack to get a certain amount of free post-launch content.

“Mortal Kombat X” was released on PC, Xbox One and PS4 on April 14 and has gone on to become the fastest-selling “MK” title in history. A release on PS3 and Xbox 360 is scheduled for some time this summer.
