‘NBA 2K15’: New Face Scan Technique, Dev Reveals Kobe Bryant’s Rating
Players can now include themselves in the "NBA 2K15" roster when they start playing the title this October. The developer has introduced a new technology that will digitally scan 3D renders of one's face onto the players.
However, there is one catch in doing this: players need either the PS4's PlayStation Eye Camera or the Xbox One's Kinect. "NBA 2K15" makes use of the next-gen systems and takes advantage of its processing power to create a system that would allow the renditions.
ABC News reports that to do the 3D scans, the cameras of the next-gen systems play a big role as they provide a lot of angles for the scanned faces, so a photorealistic 3D model will be possible. This means that players will need to be in a well-lit room for the three-minute scanning process to take place.
"That means there can't be any more alien players. You used to be able to pull and tug players' faces and create crazy noses and stuff," Thomas said to ABC News. "Because we're referencing real people, it only allows you to create human-looking players."
All of these processes will allow players to put a person who looks like them in the game, instead of a poor rendition that has been molded traditionally with the pull-and-estimate approach. However, this only goes for male players. Even though female faces can be scanned, "NBA 2K15" does not have female bodies to match them.
Meanwhile, the developer of "NBA 2K15" has also revealed the player rating for Kobe Bryant, one of the bigger names in the roster. Attack of the Fanboy has Kobe's rating, and according to the report, he won't be part of the top four players in the game.
The top four are players who have a rating of 90 or higher in the game. Of the four, three have already been named: Kevin Durant, Lebron James and Tim Duncan.
Bryant's player rating for "NBA 2K15" is 89, just a point shy of being in the top four. It's also four points lower than the last iteration of the game. The source does point out that the rating puts his injury into account, and can still consider adjusting the player rating depending on his performance in the season.
