NFL News: Detroit Lions Let Go Of Reggie Bush
The Detroit Lions are cutting Reggie Bush this offseason of the National Football League, or NFL, letting go of the veteran running back and saving about $1.7 million in salary cap room for the 2015 NFL Season.
Bush was originally signed by the Lions to a four-year contract in 2013 in a partially guaranteed deal but played only in 11 games in the 2014 season after struggling to stay in the field.
The 29 year old running back who will enter his 10th season in the NFL had 297 rushing yards in 76 carries with two rushing touchdowns plus 253 receiving yards on 40 catches last season. The production is a major decline from his 2013 numbers or in his first year with the Lions when he had 1,006 rushing yards in 223 carries with four touchdowns plus 506 receiving yards on 54 catches with 3 TDs in 14 games.
"It's not about Reggie Bush. It's about the process of evaluating where you are as a football team. We have a bunch of meetings after the season. The coaching staff meets. The scouting department meets together and we evaluate everybody's performance,” Mayhew said to ESPN.com. "Part of that, from my standpoint as GM and in terms of setting up our team, is how much of a contribution each guy made to the football team that year. In Reggie's situation, obviously last year he was injured so you have to look at the contribution versus how much you're paying a player. It's not just Reggie. It's every player on the team."
Bush was the second overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints where he played from 2006 to 2010. He also suited up for the Miami Dolphins from 2011 to 2012 before landing in Detroit. For his career, he has 5,465 rushing yards on 1,266 attempts and 3,489 receiving yards with a total of 53 touchdowns, 35 rushing and 18 receiving.
Bush can now sign with any other NFL team as a free agent.
