The Seattle Seahawks came one yard short of winning Super Bowl XLIX thanks to valiant efforts of players like Earl Thomas, who played with a separated shoulder and torn labrum. Thomas, one of the top safeties in the league, is now undergoing surgery to address the injuries and will be out for six to eight months, according to reports.

Ian Rapoport, one of the most reliable National Football League’s, or NFL, Insiders made the update on his social media account Twitter:

The 25 year old Thomas had 9 total tackles in the game versus the Patriots, which won the NFL championship game, 28-24. Thomas was the 14th selection in the 2010 NFL Draft and has been with the team since. For his career, Thomas is credited with 442 tackles, 38 pass deflections, 16 interceptions, 8 forced fumbles and 2 touchdowns.

Thomas, who is just entering his sixth year as an NFL pro next season, has already been selected four times to the Pro Bowl, in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 and also a four-time member of the All-Pro Selection, in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. He was part of the Seattle Seahawks champion team that won Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014 over the Denver Broncos.

In 2014, another Pro Bowl year, Thomas recorded 97 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, forcing 3 fumbles, 1 interception and 6 passes defended in 16 regular season games and once again helped the Seahawks become the no. 1 team in the league in scoring defence allowing the fewest points allowed for the third consecutive year.
