NFL News: St. Louis Rams To Promote Frank Cignetti Jr. To Offensive Coordinator
The St. Louis Rams are set to promote quarterbacks coach Frank Cignetti Jr. to the offensive coordinator position according to recent National Football League, NFL, reports. NFL Insider Ian Rapoport updated the development last Friday stating unnamed sources.
Cignetti Jr. will replace Brian Schottenheimer and the announcement will be done as early as next week. Schottenheimer moved back to college to handle a job at University of Georgia. Cignetti Jr. has been an assistant or specialty coach since 1989 mostly in the college level. He joined the pro ranks as QB coach in 2012 and has been with the team since then.
Cignetti Jr. has been an offensive coordinator for California, Pittsburgh and Rutgers in his most recent college stints from 2008 to 2011. He was also the quarterbacks coach for the San Francisco 49ers in 2007. Cignetti was hired by the Rams on February 7, 2012 to be their QB coach and three years later became the offensive coordinator for the team.
Cignetti comes from a football family with father, Frank Cignetti Sr. as the former coach of the Indiana University of Pennsylvania and the West Virginia University and brother, Curt, as the current coach of Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The Rams lost 10 of 16 games in the 2014 regular season to land in last place in the NFC West.
The Rams haven’t made the NFL postseason since 2004. St. Louis ranked 23rd in the league in total passing yards at 212.5 yards per game and 20th in total rushing yards at 102.2 yards per game. The Rams had unknown quarterbacks Shaun Hill and Austin Davis in the line-up in the 2014 season.
