NFL News: Jameis Winston’s Contract With Tampa Bay Buccaneers Won’t Allow Their Top Pick To Play Baseball
A specific detail in Jameis Winston's contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers means that Jameis Winston's baseball playing career is done for now while he is playing in the National Football League, or NFL. Winston, one of the many dual athletes who are good in multiple sports, played baseball and football with Florida State and was even taken as the 15th round pick in the 2012 rookie draft in Major League Baseball, or MLB.
Peter King of Sports Illustrated first reported the news about the clause in Winston’s contract prohibiting him from playing professional baseball for the next few years while under contract with the Buccaneers.
Winston, who was the 2013 Heisman Trophy winner, was picked No. 1 overall in the recent 2015 NFL Draft by the Buccaneers, which is expected to name him the starting quarterback in the upcoming 2015 NFL regular season.
“I can’t speak on that. It has always been my dream, but I’m just playing football right now,” Winston said to King in February when asked about his potential to play both football and baseball. “Right now I am focusing on football. This is the first offseason I’ve ever had where I can focus totally on football. I am loving this, being a quarterback every day … Anything that keeps me busy helps me. I love baseball. I love football. Playing both was the best of both worlds.”
In football, Winston played for the Florida State University Seminoles in 2013 and 2014. In two years, he had a total of 7,964 passing yards on 562 of 851 completions, or 66.0% completion rate, with 65 touchdowns plus 7 rushing touchdowns.
In baseball, Winston played as a pitcher and outfielder for the Seminoles in both years. Winston had a 0.209 batting average in 158 at-bats with 27 runs, 33 hits and 13 RBIs in 65 games played in college baseball in 2013 and 2014.
