NFL News: Jarryd Hayne to get more minutes against San Diego Chargers
San Francisco 49ers rookie Jarryd Hayne will be given more minutes in the club’s final preseason game against San Diego Chargers. With starting players traditionally getting rested on the last weekend of the preseason, 49ers coach Jim Tomsula could give Hayne big minuets to prove his case for an NFL career.
“Next game is going to be a game that we’ll get a lot of time, obviously if I’m still here. The starters don’t play, so it’s pretty much the twos and threes the whole game,” Hayne said, reports Fox Sports.
Hayne admitted that there are areas of his play he wish he had done better against Denver Broncos at the weekend. The 27-year-old Hayne did not get a lot of opportunities against Broncos, getting his first touch of the football deep in the third quarter with a punt return for a 12-yard gain. The former Eel made his first NFL career catch for an 18-yard reception, but was stopped for zero gain on both of his carries at running back.
Despite the Aussie’s subpar performance in San Francisco’s third preseason trial, 49ers coach Tomsula said he is confident in Hayne’s overall ability. Tomsula said Hayne got himself in the conversation of making the 49ers’ 53-man roster, which will be finalised on Sunday.
“Jarryd’s obviously got himself in the conversation. I don’t want to sit here and make statements today but he’s definitely got himself in the conversation,” Tomsula said, The Guardian reported.
The 49ers will trim its roster to 75 by Tuesday before deciding on its 53-man squad next week, but the Australian rugby league star said he is not bothered by the club’s upcoming roster cut, adding that he is not worrying about something he does not control. However, Hayne could make the cut at the expense of Kendall Hunter, according to the reports of SB Nation’s Niners Nation. The report suggested that it will not be a surprise if Hunter is boot from the lineup due to the running back’s rustiness in his first game back.
