NFL News: Larry Fitzgerald Agrees To Restructure Deal With Arizona Cardinals
The Arizona Cardinals have a created additional cap space, reportedly worth around $13 million, for the 2015 season of the National Football League, or NFL, after agreeing with Larry Fitzgerald to restructure his contract. NBC Sports’ ProFootballTalk updated the development on social media Twitter early Wednesday morning.
The reports comes in days after Cardinals general manager Steve Keim said that it would be difficult for him to see Fitzgerald, who was with the team the last 11 NFL seasons, with another NFL squad.
"The communication has been constant and hopefully we have a resolution that both parties are happy with. I think the biggest thing is, in any negotiation, you've got to find a balance where both parties feel like we have a good situation,” the Cardinals GM said in a radio interview on Friday. “And again, we're working tirelessly -- that's my number one objective right now, it's our number one objective as an organization, and we've said it all along and it hasn't changed. Larry Fitzgerald, we want him to retire a Cardinal."
Fitzgerald restructured his contract with the Cardinals before the start of the 2014 and helped the franchise create cap space and he’s doing it again in this offseason. With the old deal, the wide receiver was set to earn $16 million in 2015 with a cap hit of $23.5 million on the Cardinals. The restructured Fitzgerald deal will mean a lower salary per year and cap hit for the franchise.
Fitzgerald is an eight-time NFL Pro Bowler making the elite team in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013. Fitzgerald was the NFL’s rushing leader in 2008 when he made the First Team of the All-Pro team and rushed for 1,431 yards.
