Both Nokia Lumia 830 and Sony Xperia E3 have recently been released in September. While the Sony handset is budget-friendly, the Lumia 830 is a mid-range device. However, when it comes to the configurations housed under the hood, both devices are competitors. Readers who are interested in the Nokia Lumia 830 or the Sony Xperia E3 should check out this comparison.

Display, Exterior And Size

The Sony Xperia E3 features a 4.5-inch IPS display complemented by 480 x 854 pixels screen resolution and 218 ppi pixel density. Meanwhile, the Nokia Lumia 830 comes with a relatively bigger 5.0-inch IPS LCD display and 720 x 1,280 pixel screen resolution and 294 ppi pixel density. With a 4.5-inch display, a 720p resolution would have taken the viewing experience of the Sony device to a whole new level. The cut-down in resolution results in the reduced quality and sharpness of the display, reports Times Of India. The mid-range Lumia 830, however, scores in the display department with Nokia's ClearBlack technology along with Windows Phone's dark themed background. Nonetheless, a full HD display would have elevated the device to be able to compete with the flagship devices from other OEMs.

As far as the design goes, Sony has managed to provide a premium look to the Xperia E3 even at a nominal price. The smartphone comes with curved edges and matte-effect laden plastic exterior. However, the thicker bezels fencing the display cannot be ignored. In general, the plastic material used on the Xperia E3 cannot be compared to high-end smartphones, according to Sulekha.

Meanwhile, the Lumia 830 follows the footsteps of other Lumia devices; hence, the same design philosophy is maintained. Nonetheless, Nokia offers a sturdy metallic band surrounding the sides of the polycarbonate exterior resulting in a rock-solid, sleek outer look. Even though the edges of the smartphone look flat, in reality, the edges are slightly curved. Also, the Nokia Lumia 830 provides a comfortable grip on the matte-effect laden rear, reports Times Of India. Speaking of size, thickness and weight of the Lumia smartphone are 0.33-inch and 150 g, respectively, while the Sony handset is 0.33-inch thick and weighs 143 g.

Hardware, Software And Memory

Both smartphones are powered by the same quad-core (Qualcomm Snapdragon 400) Cortex-A7 processor, clocked at 1.2 GHz. In addition, both devices are backed by the same 1 GB of RAM. But the Lumia 830 runs on Windows Phone 8.1, while the Xperia E3 runs on Android v4.4.2 KitKat OS.

When it comes to memory, the Lumia 830 comes equipped with a good 16 GB of internal storage capacity, while the Sony handset settles for a much inferior 4 GB. Nevertheless, both phones support a microSD card. The expansion limits of the Sony and Nokia devices stand at 32 GB and 128 GB, respectively.

Camera And Battery

The Xperia E3 sports a 5 MP rear-facing camera unit with LED flash and digital image stabilisation, in addition to a VGA shooter at the front. The Lumia 830, on the other hand, features a killer 10 MP PureView unit along with the well-known Carl Zeiss optics, OIS support and LED flash. Also, the same device houses a 0.9 MP secondary shooter.

With the improved camera onboard, the Lumia handset comes with speedy shooting, moment capture and rich capture features packing a good deal for the camera lovers. With the price tag in mind, one cannot complaint about the Xperia E3's camera, however the quality of the image could have been better. On battery, the Sony smartphone is backed by Li-Ion 2330 mAh unit, while the Nokia device features a relatively inferior Li-Ion 2200 mAh battery.

1. In addition to supporting the standard connectivity options like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and microUSB, both the handsets support NFC and 4G LTE. While Sony offers dual-SIM variant of the Xperia E3, Nokia doesn't. Also, the Xperia E3 supports micro-SIM, whereas the Lumia 830 employs nano-SIM.

2. Additionally, the Xperia E3 supports a new feature dubbed "shake to start." This allows the user to tailor-make shortcuts to trigger apps by holding the handset in the hand and shaking the wrist.

The Nokia Lumia 830 (16 GB, 4G LTE) model can be availed for INR 28,799, which roughly translates to US$468 and AU$536.
