PS4, Xbox One: Potential 300GB Discs from Sony, Microsoft to Offer Bundle with Headset; Black Nintendo XL to Come Out
Talking about next-gen consoles, Sony is also looking at the possibility of 300GB next-gen optical discs in two years' time. This would be a far progress from what it has today which is only a 50GB for the dual-layer Blu-ray discs.
While the plan is to create these next-gen discs for businesses, CVG reports that it's not a far cry to also consider how this medium could also be rolled out to the consumer market.
This may also be a good match for the PS4, which is reported to have the capabilities for supporting 4K resolution content in videos. Given that the size of 4K movies are pretty much in the 100GB level, having the capability of storing these in at least 300GB worth of discs is a huge advantage--and one that could prepare them for the likes of the 4K resolution translating to games in the future.
To pursue this goal, Sony has partnered with Panasonic, with a signed basic agreement for the development of the 300GB disc.
"In recent years, there has been an increasing need for archive capabilities, not only from video production industries, such as motion pictures and broadcasting, but also from cloud data centres that handle increasingly large volumes of data following the evolution in network services," said the official statement of Sony and Panasonic, as quoted by CVG.
"Both Sony and Panasonic have a proven track record in developing Blu-ray Disc format technologies, and by actively promoting the adoption of a new standard for next-generation high-capacity optical discs, they intend to offer solutions that preserve valuable data for future generations."
Microsoft considering bundled headsets
Is this another one of those cases wherein Microsoft listens to the demands of its customers?
After stating that there will not be a bundled headset and even vehemently denying a previous rumour that pointed to the possibility that the Xbox One will come with a bundled headset, it seems Microsoft wants to please its fans even more.
"We've heard the feedback," said Albert Penello, senior director of product management and planning, in a tweet quoted by Videogamer. "Looking into it."
Now that they are looking into a bundled headset, does this mean that there will also be a bundle without the Kinect? According to the report, Microsoft has originally slated the Kinect to be the main source of communication for the Xbox One, as it is created to pick up sounds and recognize the players who are in the living room.
For the meantime, there has been no further word about the developments, but if this is offered at a lower price, Microsoft may win over some of its fans even more.
Nintendo 3DS XL now in black
It seems that you shouldn't just brush off Nintendo just yet, as the company has just released word that it will be launching a black Nintendo 3DS XL on August 11, the same date as when the Mario & Luigi: Dream Team will be seeing retail.
According to EnGadget, the new addition will bring the range of 3DS colors to four, if you count the previous three, red, blue, and pink.
However, the color is pretty much the only difference from the previous releases, as the system is still the same, and the price is still at $200, so a sleeker look is all you will really get with the new 3DS XL. But it's a pretty good make for those unconvinced.
