Australian dollar outlook 29/03/2011
The AUD has had a record night again during the offshore session pushing through the previous post-float high which was only seen on Friday night; hitting a new high of USD1.0314.

The Australian dollar maintained recent strength onshore yesterday consolidating well above 1.02 and establishing itself at 1.0260 to enter offshore trade. With little of note to report during the day it became a different story during London hours as the Reserve Bank of Australia predicts a flood of capital into the country totalling $120bn as the currency hits new post-float records.

U.S. stocks gained Thursday as investors largely looked past the deepening political crisis in Portugal to focus on encouraging earnings from technology companies and U.S. jobs data. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 89 points, or 0.7%, to 12175 in late afternoon trading, led by a 2.3% rise in Home Depot. The Nasdaq Composite gained 1.4% to 2736. After showing some slight weakness during yesterday’s local session, the AUD has once again outperformed during the offshore session, pushing through USD1.0100 overnight on the back of higher commodity prices and a positive night on the offshore equity markets.

The AUD has weakened this morning as continued unrest in the Middle East reduced the appetite for riskier currencies such as the AUD and saw demand for the USD increase. Due to the US public holiday for President’s Day their markets were closed overnight, which saw the AUD track the European equity markets early on in the offshore session.

The Markit composite purchasing-managers index for the Euro Zone rose from 57.0 to 58.4 in February - well ahead of expectations and its highest levels since July 2006. The Munich based IFO Institute said its German business confidence index rose from 110.3 to 111.2 in February.
