The Galaxy View, which is either a big screen tablet or a small personal TV, has finally been launched by Samsung. It gets to retail outlets Nov. 6.

Teased back in September at IFA 2015, the Galaxy View boasts of a large 18.4-inch display; video optimised UI and a long battery life that allows up to eight hours of video playback.

“At Samsung, we are committed to creating new possibilities and bringing our consumers the best mobile experience,” said JK Shin, CEO and Head of Samsung’s IT & Mobile Business, in a media release.

The Galaxy View features an 18.4-inch Full HD display with 1920 x 1080 resolution resulting in a pixel density of 123ppi. Powered by a 1.6GHz octa-core processor and 2 GB of RAM, the tablet weighs 2.65 kg (5.8 pounds) and measures 275.8 mm x 451.8 mm x 11.9 mm. The tablet seems to be too heavy to carry in a backpack.

The device will be available with either 32 GB or 64 GB of internal storage that can be further expanded via the microSD card slot. With the 2.1 Mp camera on board, the View looks like a good alternative for an all-in-one desktop PC. It comes with a handle that makes the device easy to carry.

The connectivity collection includes Bluetooth 4.1 BLE, Wi-Fi 802.11 ac and an LTE model with a nano-SIM slot. Samsung claims the Galaxy View can play up to eight hours of continuous video, thanks to the massive 5,700 mAh battery.

Samsung also said the Galaxy View is designed to provide the best possible seamless video experience. The high quality dual 4W stereo speakers enable users to enjoy video content.

Running on Android 5.1 Lollipop with a Media UX skin on top, the Galaxy View will cost US$599 (AU$842) in the U.S. Although it lacks a HDMI port, the device houses a USB port, a headphone jack, and a charging port, reports Gizmodo.

“We are very excited to introduce the new Galaxy View, providing an entirely new way of consuming mobile video and entertainment,” added Shin.
