Casting speculations for the “Star Wars” spinoff movie have recently been making headlines. It’s been rumoured that Rooney Mara has tried out for the female lead role. Now reports claim her sister is also vying for the same role, although it’s believed Kate has an “edge” to take the part.

According to Cinema Blend, Variety reporter Justin Kroll broke the news regarding Kate Mara’s interest to star in the spinoff. On Thursday, Jan. 22, he tweeted, “Twitter scoop following @Borys_Kit STAR WARS testing story from yesterday, hearing the fourth girl who tested is Rooney's sister, Kate Mara.” Kroll’s announcement reportedly came 24 hours after the first news about Rooney Mara testing out for the female lead.

Little is known yet regarding the filming for the “Star Wars” spinoff film. The movie is said to be in its early stages of pre-production with Gareth Edwards as director. Thus, according to Cinema Blend, it’s still unclear if Kate Mara is suited to play the role of the female lead. However, she may have a big chance of landing the part.

“She did just recently get her first dose of blockbuster experience playing Sue Storm a.k.a. The Invisible Woman in the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot. She may have a bit of an edge as a result of this, if not only because Josh Trank - The 'Fantastic Four's' director - is attached to helm a 'Star Wars' spin-off movie of his own,” writer Eric Eisenberg said.

Other female stars who tried out for the lead role in the “Star Wars” spinoff are Tatiana Maslany from “Orphan Black,” Felicity Jones from “The Theory of Everything” and Kate Mara’s sister, Rooney Mara from “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.” This lead role is still a mystery since filming details have yet to be revealed. According to Making Star Wars, the movie will mostly be doing on-location scenes. Unlike in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which filmed mostly at Pinewood Studios, the site claimed the spinoff will be taking their cast and crew to film in Mexico. Start dates have reportedly already been given to the crew. Likewise, sources have supposedly confirmed the rumoured importance of bounty hunters in the story.
