Surface Pro 5 vs Porsche Design Book One: Microsoft has a worthy competitor in the 2-in-1 hybrid segment; Details revealed
While the world waits for the Microsoft Surface Book 2, Porsche has a surprise for fans too. The company is already one of the most sought after auto brands in the world, and it also has limited edition handsets. Recently, it has been revealed that the company is getting into the computing business with Porsche Design Book One. Both companies are now in the race o build one of the slickest 2-in-1 laptops. Microsoft is already making waves with its Surface line-up, that includes, Surface Pro, Surface Phone (not yet announced) and Surface Book.
According to Tech Radar, Porsche, in a bid to straightaway crash in the middle of things, and to compete with Microsoft Surface Book 2, has produced a 13.3-inch stunner, embedded in a milled aluminium cover with a matte anodized surface finish. Porsche Design Book One’s hinge has also been designed like a sports car transmission, allowing the device to rotate every angle, and even detaching itself from the keyboard case completely. The device is expected to be released in the US in April though availability in Australia is not known currently. Surface Pro 5 has real competition.
The Porsche Design Book One will cost US$2,495 (AU$3,250) and will pack some serious power with Intel’s Kaby Lake Core i7-7500U processor, clocked at 3.5GHz. It is also expected to come with 512GB of Intel-brand, PCIe solid-state storage and 16GB RAM. It will have a QHD+ Touch Display with a screen resolution of 3,200 x 1,800 pixels and inter-plane switching (IPS) for wider viewing angles. Meanwhile, Along with Surface Pro 5, the Surface Book 2 is also said to have the Intel Kaby Lake processor for faster processing and less power consumption.
The Microsoft Surface Book 2 display is said to receive a bump and may have a 4K display. The device could come with an updated Surface Pen. The Porsche Design Book One will come with two USB Type-C ports with Thunderbolt 3, two standard USB 3.0 ports and 5MP infrared webcam for Windows Hello login through Windows 10 Pro. According to Slash Gear, the Book One has just been revealed in MWC 2017 and it seems like a high-style, high-performance computing system, not affordable by all. The Surface Book 2 may want to include such heavy-duty ports to compete with Porsche.
The target consumer for both the Microsoft Surface Book 2 and Porsche Design Book One seems to be the same. Both will be aimed at creative professionals who have the money to spare on these expensive devices.
