A man was severely injured in the head after he was struck by a van in Sydney CBD on Friday morning. The accident occurred at 11AM in the middle of Elizabeth Street, near the intersection of Liverpool Street.

The man, covered in blood, was lying on the road when emergency services arrived at the scene. He had sustained serious injuries. The police cordoned off a part of the street while paramedics attended to the injured victim.

According to AAP (via Herald Sun), the man is believed to be in his 40s. He was treated at the site of the accident and was subsequently transported to St Vincent’s Hospital. He remains in critical condition in intensive care as of Friday afternoon.

The police talked with the driver of the van. He was later taken for mandatory blood and alcohol tests. Officers from Sydney City LAC arrived at the scene and will be investigating the cause of the accident. The police are urging those with any information to come forward.

The incident comes after a motorcycle driver was killed in Sydney CBD in September last year. The incident occurred after the motorcyclist was struck by a truck near the corner of Liverpool and George Streets.

The motorcyclist had died on the scene. The truck driver was taken to Sydney Eye Hospital for mandatory drug and alcohol testing.

One of the witnesses described the scene to News Corp as “horrific.” Other witnesses described the motorcyclist losing control, hitting the footpath, falling on the road and being run over by the truck. A section of the Liverpool Street was shuttered as the police, ambulance and other emergency services attended the scene.
