Tom Cruise Was To Play Steve Jobs Says Leaked Emails From Sony Hack
Quite recently, Sony Pictures was attacked by hackers in an unprecedented way. The attackers managed to amass data ranging up to 100 terabytes. This massive cyber attack revealed very sensitive information like internal email communications, social security numbers of customers, films and scripts, among others. To further the existing woes, the stolen information is being revealed to public every day, little-by-little. This time around, freshly leaked emails point to Sony Pictures discussing Steve Jobs biopic. Notably, the details pertaining to the actors who were being considered for the aforesaid biopic have come out.
Reportedly, Sony was producing the Steve Jobs biopic. However, the company sold the film to Universal Studios. Based on the leaked information picked up by Ars Technica, screenwriter Aaron Sorkin wanted Tom Cruise to play Steve Jobs. An email dated Oct. 31 says Aaron was lobbying for Tom, while the film director Danny Boyle had worries about the "Mission Impossible" actor's age, reports MacRumors.
In Aaron's own words, "I just got off the phone with Danny who's concerned about the age but I think I got him thinking about it and he's going to look at some scenes from Lions for Lambs where Tom's basically auditioning for Jobs." "He's also concerned that the choice will be met with derision because it's such a commercial choice but I honestly think that ends up working for us. Tom's going to surprise some people and they'll want to reward that," he added further.
On the other hand, the director Danny Boyle wanted to cast the "X-Men" actor Michael Fassbender over Tom Cruise. Even though Aaron was not keen on agreeing to Danny's choice, he relented at last. In a reply to Danny's mail, Aaron wrote, "This used to be an event. I don't know who Michael Fassbender is and the rest of the world isn't going to care. This is insane." However, in a final reply, he gave in and said, "F*** it. He's a great actor whose time has come."
Contrary to the aforementioned email exchange, Sony Pictures tried to cast either of Leonardo DiCaprio or Christian Bale. Nonetheless, both the great actors pulled up their stakes. Furthermore, Tobey Maguire and Matthew McConaughey's names were also making rounds. At last, the role has been finalised to be played by Michael Fassebender.
Ultimately, Danny's choice to cast Michael Fassebender led Sony to drop the biopic, as the executives failed to secure financing for the movie with the "X-Men" star in the lead role. Subsequently, Danny Boyle and the producer Scott Rudin signed Universal Studios to produce the Steve Jobs biopic.
