UFC News: Urijah Faber Points Out Threat Of Submission Is Conor McGregor’s Achilles Heel
Ultimate Fighting Championship, or UFC, bantamweight fighter Urijah Faber has some refreshing thoughts on up and coming superstar Conor McGregor. The 35-year-old former featherweight champion claims that there is chink in the armour of McGregor, specifically his tendency to wane in the face of a submission.
"I wouldn't mind fighting Conor. I'll tell you what -- he's got something that a lot of guys don't have. Something a guy like me doesn't have, a guy like Chad Mendes doesn't have, a guy like Frankie Edgar doesn't have, and that's the instincts and willingness to give up when he's about to get knee barred,” Faber recently told Brendan Schaub and Bryan Callen in a recently aired podcast of their show, “The Fighter and the Kid.”
Faber’s comments come at a time when “The Notorious’” stock is at an all-time high. The Irishman is scheduled to tackle reigning featherweight champion Jose Aldo for the title this coming July 11 at UFC 189 which will be held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. He has vowed to conquer the division and move up to the next weight class before retiring at the pinnacle of his stardom.
Faber is yet to be convinved of this and believes the contender will be stopped short due to his fear of succumbing to a submission. The American mixed martial arts fighter added that if the body of McGregor is in danger, his tendency is to give up and not fight through the threat. Faber must be referring to the two losses in the 27-year-old McGregor’s career which both came via submission, first to Artemij Sitenkov and then to his fellow Irishman, Joseph Duffy, who recently signed up and fought as a UFC talent.
Nevertheless, the Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belt holder Faber acknowledged the talent in McGregor and added that he would be willing to fight him despite the weight disadvantage. McGregor is renowned for his bravado and trash-talking abilities on and off the court. He recently went on a world tour to promote his upcoming fight with Aldo and during the event figured in a controversial belt tug-of-war incident when he sneaked in and snatched away the belt from Aldo during a press conference in Brazil.
