With both top smartphone makers suffering from weaker sales of their flagship devices, Samsung and Apple's rivalry - which could be seen from court battles to TV adverts - will be revived anew with the release of a new advert by the South Korean tech giant.

The 56-second commercial, made for Iceland, has become viral just within one week from posting in YouTube with so far more than 450,000 hits.

Although both competitors had made adverts in the past that highlighted their respective products to point out the weakness of the rival device, this is the first time that Samsung used a real apple fruit to make its point that the S4 is a far superior product.

The advert is to push for sales of the S4 - which had reached 20 million units shipped in June but continued to disappoint analysts - in Europe by promoting the Icelandic language capabilities of the flagship device, using the tagline "the phone that understands you."

Other interesting parts of the advert include a goat and dancing ninjas, but the best part is at the end when the main character literally eats the competition away by biting on the red, juicy apple.

The advert drew mixed reactions.

In the Mashable comment page, Jerry Byers noted that "There's a lot to mock about Apple."

Scott Mason pointed out that based on Samsung's weak sales, it "needs to be mocking the white box manufacturers. These are the true enemy."

Ned Nikolic agreed and added he lost a few IQ points from watching the commercial. "Samsung you're a joke! Start branding you company about your products rather than being chicken shit of your biggest threats! Your brand will never have the customer loyalty that Apple has. In fact your digging yourself a deeper whole by insulting Apple customers."

More comments chide Samsung for the advert, with one commenter asking "Why is Justin Bieber running Samsung's creative dept?"

However, Ricardo Alberto Sinisterra said, "Both Samsung and Apple are overrated. When they both such at making phones. Shame on them."
