Warner Bros. Announce Lego Batman Movie [Watch Video]
Warner Bros. announced on April 20 that the Lego Batman movie, which is yet-to-be titled, is set to release on Feb. 10, 2017. The announcement was made before the start of CinemaCon in Las Vegas.
The studio also announced the release dates of "Ninjago" and the sequel to 2014's "The Lego Movie," titled "The Lego Movie Sequel." The Lego ninja series "Ninjago" will hit theaters on Sept. 22, 2017 while "The Lego Movie Sequel" will release on May 18, 2018.
"We are very excited about dating our upcoming LEGO animated features, which already have a worldwide fan following, built on the foundation of the first film." Said Dan Fellman, the studio’s domestic distribution president, according to The Wrap. Fellman also added that these films were "just the beginning" of a creative animation slate planned to delight audiences for years to come.
Warner Bros. president of international distribution, Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, said that the studio was looking forward to enlarging "The Lego Movie" franchise globally with these "incredibly imaginative movies." The executive also added that all three movies offered something unique to a wide range of audiences around the world.
The report also quoted Jill Wilfert, VP of licensing and entertainment at The Lego Group, saying that the company was pleased to continue their "partnership" with Warner Bros. He also added that it was "truly amazing" how the big screen added another "dimension" to the Lego world.
The Lego Batman first appeared in "The Lego Movie" as one of the main characters in the film. In October 2014, The Hollywood Reporter reported that the Lego Batman movie would be directed by Chris McKay and written by Seth Grahame-Smith. (Watch Batman's introduction in "The Lego Movie" below.)
Will Arnett will reprise the voice of Batman. The Dark Knight was one of the highlights of "The Lego Movie," a surprise hit of 2014, which went on to gross a worldwide total of $468.1 million. One of the songs from the movie, "Everything is Awesome" was also nominated for Best Song at the Oscars. (Watch the video below.)
The Lego Batman is already a very popular franchise. There have already been three video games and a straight-to-video "Lego Batman: The Movie - DC Super Heroes Unite," where Troy Baker has provided the voice for the caped-crusader.
